When did you receive your first book?

I am told mine were received in my first weeks: rag books, board books, bath time books and so on.

For most children raised in Africa, this is not the case.

For Ananaya and Moïse there is no question of them having any.  They have neither books, nor pencils, nor toys.

If you would like to buy a special present, why don't you have a look at the Project Kinshasa Wishlist and choose something special that will give some happiness to these little boys who have so little access to what we consider normal in a western childhood.

Pour moi, on me dit que c'était dans mes premières semaines: des livres en tissu, des livres imperméables, des livres en carton et ainsi de suite.
Pour la plus part des enfants élevés en Afrique ce n'est pas le cas.
Pour Ananaya et Moïse il n'est même pas question.  Ils n'ont ni un livre ni un crayon, ni un cahier ni des jouets.
Si tu aimerais acheter un cadeau spécial, pourquoi pas regarder Projet Kinshasa liste d'envies et choisir quelque chose qui pourrait donner de la joie à ces petits garçons avec si peu de ce qu'on voit comme normal dans une enfance occidentale?

Guy Vakala, teacher and Maestre Ninja, capoeiriste.

Guy will be the teacher and the success to this programme, having proved his competence for the task looking after Kofi all year with patience, kindness and intelligence.

Maestre Ninja (Musikikongo Nkoy Dieu Donné) is the foundation on which it will be possible to build something worthwhile.  He works with patience and love with a small team of little capoeira disciples.  His own self discipline, with which he inspires his little followers, will make possible all other attempts to help them.  Ninja is an impressive young man with whom it is a pleasure to work.

Mastre Cobra (Wangsong Mukedi), at 17, trains daily with Ninja.  

Proud of what they have achieved together, they continue to try and find ways of improving their own standard as well as helping more than 100 youngsters across Kinshasa.

Guy, ayant prouvé son aptitude pour la tâche avec un travail patient, gentil et intelligent, avec Kofi toute cette année, sera l'enseignant et la clé au succès du programme.

Maestre Ninja, (Musikikongo Nkoy Dieu Donné) est la fondation sur laquelle il sera possible de construire quelque chose.  Il travaille avec patience et amour avec une grand équipe de petits disciples capoeirista.  Sa propre discipline qu'il enseigne à ses suivants rendra possibles toutes les autres tentatives d'assistance.  Un jeune homme très impressionnant avec qui c'est un plaisir de travailler.

Encouragés par Maestre Yannick et Maestre Ninja, Ananaya et Moîse montrent leur talent.

Maestre Cobra (Wangsong Mukedi) à 17 ans s'entraîne tous les jours avec Ninja.  Fiers de ce qu'ils ont construit entre eux, ils continuent à chercher moyen de s'améliorer et d'aider plus que 100 jeunes à travers la ville de Kinshasa.

Des jeux, des crayons, des coloriages, des jouets, des prix et beaucoup plus encore!

Les préparatifs sont en cours pour un début à la fin de la semaine prochaine.

Francesca est arrivée à Kinshasa de l'Angleterre cette semaine avec ses valises pleines, après avoir fait les magasins avec Ann. On apprécie énormément.

Francesca arrived in Kinshasa, from the UK, this week laden with the products of her shopping spree with Ann.

Project Kinshasa - What? Why? Who? Where? When?

Discovery games, creative activities and songs.
To give these children who will struggle unaided to get to school, due to lack of money, the experience of learning through play.
Probable aims:

• Say the alphabet
• Count in French to ten
• Write the numbers (in figures) up to ten
• Know the colours in French
• Know the shapes in French
• Know how to introduce themselves in French
• Control a pencil to colour and draw a line
• Wash hands with soap
• Brush teeth correctly
• etc

There will be a presentation of certificates for those who are 100% present i.e. for all twelve sessions.

Who?

Why?
To do a test run.  To try out some possibilities in the hope of putting in place a more sustainable programme to support these little guys' education.
Moïse and Ananaya are very talented 5 year old capoeirista.  They only speak Lingala and their families lack the means to feed them properly all the time and will certainly not be able to get them in to school where they could learn French.  The lack of education in general and of French, in particular, will have a very negative impact on their hopes forever.
There are numerous youngsters that live int eh streets of Kinshasa without any possibility of an honest living.
The level of poverty of the families in question here puts these little ones in great danger of joining this street life before too long.
On the other hand, the fact of having already had the experience of the discipline of learning capoeira and of success after working hard, gives then am advantage and can serve as the basis for them to learn other important lessons towards literacy, numeracy, teamwork, health and hygiene etc.

When?
At least three times a week from 8 o'clock to 11 o'clock after capoeira training.  In total, at least 12 sessions during the month of July.
It will start on Friday, 1st July and end on Wednesday 27th July with the presentation of certificates.

Where?
The sessions will take place at Limeté, septième rue, in Madame Nadine's courtyard.
